UPDATE 2013.02.07 -- Revised WBPF Gathering Location

On Feb 17, WBPF members are encouraged to gather together with other interfaith groups at this event.

The Interfaith Moral Action on Climate has endorsed this event and we hope you will participate and also help spread the word very broadly. People of faith have a great deal to offer to those who are deeply concerned about the urgent climate crisis. All of our faith traditions emphasize the importance of care for creation and stewardship of the earth and all of its life forms.

What:   The largest climate rally in history of the USA.

When:   February 17, 2013, 11:30 am - 4:00 pm
Please arrive by 11:30 am for the Faith-based speakers
So we can help set a peaceful and compassionate tone
              for this large multi-organizational event

Where: REVISED -- The multi-faith contingent will gather outside the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden on the National Mall. The Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden is located on the National Mall between 7th and 9th Street SW. We will meet on the north side/Mall side of the sculpture garden on the gravel pathway.

Look for a WBPF sign. We'll be with Tim Kumfer, of the Festival Center, and Rose Berger, of Sojourners, who will be carrying a large "dove" to help us find them in the crowd.

The closest Metro station is L'Enfant Plaza (green, yellow, orange, or blue lines).

Sign-up not required.

After the interfaith talks, we'll join the larger group for the rally and walk at noon.  WBPF members will be free to leave when they need to.
What to bring: They ask us to bring congregational banners and wear congregational T-shirts, to show the variety of faiths represented, so bring any Buddhist banners or signs, or wear t-shirts.  They aren't necessary if you don't have anything.
More Details: are available on the WBPF Blog.
<-- Here's a link to the URL in this image, one of the organizing groups.
The Twitter hashtag is#ForwardOnClimate & here is more info from the Sierra Club & this 350.org video.

Currently available agenda details for the main event which begins at Noon:
"We'll join together to hear the powerful words from our speakers, then assemble on Constitution Avenue, march up 17th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, then over to 15th Street, where we're going to form a giant human pipeline representing Keystone XL and the dirty energy system of the past. We'll then transform the giant dirty pipeline into a symbol of the renewable energy economy of the future. Tens of thousands strong, we'll form the largest symbol of hope for a safe climate future that this country has ever seen. After that we'll return to the monument to get fired up for how we keep moving the forward towards action on climate change with some music (with artists being confirmed as you read this)."

Oct 11 OMA - Anti-Muslim Hate Ads in DC & NYC Metro To Be Met With Peaceful Ads and Loving Kindness (2012)

Opportunity for Mindful Action for Peace & Social Justice

As we each consider if and how we might participate in the following invitation from the Friends Committee on National Legislation and the Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign to counter anti-Muslim hate ads in the DC & NYC metros, we realize that our Mindfulness practice shows us how we can go beyond countering such hate speech, by extending our loving kindness to those who promote hatred.

       Hatred never ends through hatred.
By non-hate alone does it end.
       This is an ancient truth.

Subject: Have you seen the new ads in Metro?

FCNL

A photo of the Anti-Muslim advertisement at the Takoma Metro station

On Monday, signs went up in Metro stations in the
Washington, DC area attacking Muslims. The ads
read:
In any war between the civilized man
and the
savage, support the civilized man.
Support Israel.
Defeat Jihad.”

The ads promote inaccurate and inflammatory
stereotypes
about American Muslims, by linking
“savages” to “jihad” and
calling for their “defeat.”
Muslims in the U.S. are increasingly targeted for hate
crimes, and these ads support further violence.
In the New York subways, and now in DC, attempts to ban the
signs have failed. First amendment free speech rights have
trumped concerns about the “demeaning” nature of the
message.
So it’s time to send a new message that love
will trump hate.

FCNL is participating with the Shoulder to Shoulder campaign
to fund competing messages to be posted in the metro
system. Our message says:

Hate speech is not civilized. Support peace in word
and deed.
”

We hope you will send a message that the anti-Muslim
ads don’t speak for you.

Please spread the word by forwarding this email and sharing
on Facebook.
Things you can do:
(1) Write a letter to the editors of the Washington Post
and the Washington Times with a message that honors
religious freedom and diversity.
(2) If you are a Metro customer, write to WMATA
about your own experience riding the Metro
and
seeing these “hate” signs.
 Metro should not profit from
a hateful, inflammatory message that attacks Metro
customers. Here are some points to mention in your letter:
  • I’m writing about the anti-Muslim ads paid for by
    the American Freedom Defense Initiative.
  • The ads encourage discrimination against
Muslims by comparing them to “savages”
    rather than “civilized men”.
  • When I see signs with hate messages, like the
ones that went on display today, I feel attacked.
Even though I am not Muslim myself, Muslims
are my neighbors, my co-workers, my partners
    in the community.
  • WMATA shouldn’t profit from a message of
hatred. Proceeds from the ads should go to the
    DC Human Rights Commission.
[3] After you've taken action, we encourage you to
sign Shoulder to Shoulder's petition to WMATA.

Thank you for your work for a more just, peaceful
community both here and and abroad.
Sincerely,
Ruth Flower
Associate Executive Secretary for
Legislative Affairs
